Installation of True Type Fonts
To install TrueType fonts, use the Font Installer for AFP Systems to add the fonts to resource libraries and update the resource access table (RAT), which allows access to the resource libraries. The Font Installer for AFP Systems is an IBM-provided utility program, which is an optional feature of the Infoprint Fonts for Multiplatforms product. The Font Installer utility runs on Windows systems.
Note that the fonts are installed into resource libraries that are accessible to the print servers on that platform, as well as to other applications that run on the platform, such as document formatters.
The Font Installer installs only Unicode-enabled TrueType and OpenType fonts. Attempts to install a font that is not Unicode-enabled result in an error message and the font is not installed.
The font-installation process consists of four parts:
1 Physically adding the font to the resource library
2 Updating the library's RAT with an entry for the font
3 Generating an object identifier (OID) for the font
4 Setting permissions for the font. This includes making a font eligible for capture
The Font Installer can install not only TrueType fonts, but also TrueType Collections (TTC).
Font linking
TrueType fonts can be linked to a TrueType base font to form an ordered list of fonts that are essentially processed
as a single font. The font linking function fulfills two primary requirements:
-
"Supports the ability to add user-defined characters to a given font. This requirement is particularly strong in Japanese, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese markets.
-
"Supports the ability to extend a font with additional characters. These are not user-defined characters, but characters that did not fit into a single font due to the 64K restriction for TrueType fonts. The most important example for this requirement is the extension of the base Chinese character set for GB18030 support.
For more information about installing and managing TrueType Fonts,
... consult Chapter 4 in "Using OpenType Fonts in an AFP System" (G544-5876). Information about how to determine if a font is Unicode-enabled is in Appendix B of that publication. For detailed information, please consult the product documentation for the Font Installer for AFP Systems.
Note: While OS/400 supports an alternative True Type font-installation method for migration purposes, this method does not support font linking, font capture, or verification that the fonts are Unicode-enabled.
