Q:DHCP lease released when print server reboots

Question:
It seems that when I reboot the print server through the menus it causes the DHCP lease to be renewed. It does not happen when I reboot by disconnecting the power. I need the lease to maintain the same IP address

Answer:
The DHCP implementation in Intermate print servers conforms by default to the RFC for DHCP, where it is specified that a "graceful" shutdown shall result in a lease release. Activating the Reboot (controlled/immediate) will thus make the print server request the DHCP server to release the lease before it shuts down.

The DHCP server can decide to reassign the same IP address again, which may be problematic with strained DHCP pools. The more natural alternative is to use a DHCP server's ability to lock the MAC address to the IP, which is typically done in environments where assurance is needed that a given network device is always assigned the same address.

In order to accomodate users who cannot use any of the suggested solutions in their DHCP server settings, and who do not want to manually assign a fixed IP address, the Intermate101 firmware version G32-4471 includes a new option in the TCP/IP configuration menu for disabling the lease release request. If you use the Intermate100 or the LAN FS3, or older products, and need this special option, consider migrating to the Intermate101. Users of Intermate100 or LAN FS3 can request new software with this feature.
