Q:System administrator will not enable Autocreate Virtual Device
|
Question: I use the IAPS TN5250e SCS and need to create one or more devices (DEVD) on the iSeries or AS/400 host. My system administrator will not enable Autocreate Virtual Device (i.e. set QAUTOCFG to 1) as shown in the Getting Started guide. What should I do?

Answer: Some administrators are concerned about security risks with Virtual Devices. Here are some suggestions for the administrator.
1, One possibility is to configure the host in such a way that the Virtual Devices do not, in fact, pose a risk. See the security manual for iSeries and AS/400 http://www-900.ibm.com/cn/support/library/as400/download/C4153024.PDF and the article "QAUTOVRT: The Dangers of Virtual Devices" by Joe Hertvik (http://www.mcpressonline.com/mc/.218b7529)
2. Another possiblity is to have the administrator simply set QAUTOVRT to a number equal to or greater than the expected number of virtual connections. This is sometimes sufficient, even though QAUTOCFG is still set to 0 (off).
3. A third possiblity is to have the administrator enable QAUTOCFG for a few minutes while you configure the IAPS to create the devices. When they are created, the administrator can then disable QAUTOCFG..
4. If everything else fails, you may have to create your DEVDs manually. Be sure that the settings match the configuration in your IAPS (Device Description name in "Configuration: TNe Sessions").
Possible authentication issues
If the system prevents you from creating a DEVD - regardless of the method - check the host logs to see if there, e.g., is an authentication issue: the IAPS as user (or you as user) does not have permission to create a DEVD.
First check the System Operator Log: DSPMSG QSYSOPR
Then check the Global System Log: DSPLOG (Be warned - it could be very big, as it shows ALL activity on the iSeries!)
A tip about QAUTOCFG: If you do not want pass-through to automatically configure any devices, the System Value QAUTOCFG should be set to 0
Pass-through deletes virtual devices only if they are damaged, or if the device needs to be created again in order to change its type.
A tip about QAUTOVRT: The QAUTOVRT System Value tells how many virtual (remote) connections are allowed - default is Zero. (Intermate use the value 250.)
Note: Devices are not automatically deleted to bring the total number down to the QAUTOVRT limit.
Therefore, if you change from a higher value to a lower value, the system does not delete virtual devices.
