Q:No dialog pops up when a print has been sent to a file.

Question: Q. No file dialog pops up when a print job has been sent to a file (applies to IPDS Client 2005, WinIPDS and WinIPDS Pro when configured to use Windows drivers as target).

Answer: By default, the IPDS software runs as a Windows Service in Local mode. Since the WinIPDS is supposed to run without a user logged in, actions requiring a user login are blocked - and working with a file dialog, for example to give a name to the output file, is one such action.
There are, however, two alternative workarounds for this.
A. Run WinIPDS in "Console Mode". This solution will also support detection of network printers.
You can reconfigure Windows to run the WinIPDS in "Console Mode". This means WinIPDS will only be operational when a user has logged in on the PC, and therefore not recommended if WinIPDS runs on an un-manned PC (e.g. a server that should start automatically after power failures).
The procedure for running WinIPDS in Console mode is explained in the WinIPDS Admin Guide
B. Allow the Service to interact with the desktop using the Local System Account. This solution does NOT support detection of network printers.
1. Select My Computer (right-click) - Computer Management - Services and Applications - Services.
(or from the Start Menu select: Settings - Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Services).
2. Right-click on the ipds software servce (IPDS Client 2005 or WinIPDS).
3. Select Properties.
4. Select the Log On tab.
5. Select Local System Account and Allow service to interact with desktop.
6. Click OK to save.
7. Close the Services management window.
The output file must be placed on the computer running the service as the Local System Account har no access rights to printing and storing the file in a network folder. We will soon be publishing advice on how to allow the Service to interact with the desktop without running into this limitation and related limitations.
