********************************************************************** PRODUCT: IPDS Client 2005 ("G52")for Windows SOFTWARE RELEASE: Release 1.1 Revision G52-11c-014-6 RELEASE DATE: 2006-10-03 SUPPORT PORTAL: www.intermate.com/ipdsclient The IPDS Client 2005 is a software-based print server, powered by Intermate's "IPDS Ultra". The print server redirects print from the IBM Host to the target printer via IPDS Services using Windows' drivers and Print Manager spool system. 1. This release ********************************************************************** Release 1.1 "Customer BETA" Revision G52-11c-014-6 2005-09-01 1. The installer now includes a repair/upgrade feature, which will retain the configuration while upgrading the software. 2. The GUI has been modified to reflect an optimized ordering procedure. 3. The program now includes a Quick Start page. The Admin Guide is now only found on the support portal. Known limitations: ------------------ - The following limitations seem to be a consequence of the IPDS Client 2005's running as a Windows Service (thus enabling automatic restart after restoring power): - The program will only detect network printers defined as local printers on the PC it is running on. (internal ref #1649) - You cannot print output "to file". This means that print to PDF with applications such as Acrobat (Distiller) may not work. There may be work-arounds, which we will investigate. - Because IPDS Client 2005 has no control of the print after it has been put in Windows spool queue, the IPDS page counter update is limited to using the "Early" method in which the page counter increments after the page is IPDS processed and spooled - and before physical printing is completed. Note that the "Early" method is reflected in the Host Connection Status: the value "Printing" is shown for a briefer time than would be the case in an implementation where the IPDS Emulation keeps communicating with the printer until the physical printing is finished. - If a driver reports "not enough memory" in the PC, you may need to adjust the Resolutions Supported setting in Configuration: Printer Drivers: Miscellaneous. This problem and work-around have been observed in the Kyocera FS-7000 KX Windows driver: 600 dpi works fine, while all other settings - including "Any" - result in the memory problem. - In the following situations, attempts to print will fail, and an error message will be generated in the IPDS Client log, but no error is reported to the host. - You have deleted or renamed a Windows driver used by an IPDS Service while it had an active host session underway. - You have deleted or renamed a Windows driver without also actively performing an Update in the Printer Drivers menu. 2. History ********************************************************************** Release 1.1 Revision G52-11c-014-5 2006-08-11 ======================================================== 1. The Document Name in the Windows printer queue is now build from the following IPDS job parameters: Job Name, Number, User, File Name, and Number, which forms the unique Host file name. 2. In order to ensure that spool jobs remain separate in the Windows Printer Spool System, the IPDS Client 2005 now tests for job boundaries. 3. In order to prevent the printer from entering an idle state while a large print job is being spooled, the IPDS Client 2005 will allow you to request that a large printjob be broken into a number of smaller print jobs. For each IPDS Service (session), you can configure the maximum number of pages per fragment. 4. Error in LFI (Load Font Index) fixed (undefined, nonprinting, incrementing). Public BETA Release 1.1 Revision G52-11b-013 2005-09-01 ======================================================== New features ------------ - It is now possible to purchase optional FS45 full image color support (internal ref #1570). - It is now possible to define and add Customer Paper Definitions to the list of Paper Types (Configuration: Printer Drivers > IPDS Tray Info (internal ref #1659). - The "Fit" VPA setting (Configuration: IPDS Services > Emulator Setup) is now implemented. Improvements and fixes ---------------------- - Updated install/uninstall program starting with V1.1 - You do not have to manually stop the Windows Service before uninstalling the program, and uninstalling no longer requires the presence af an .isu file. The procedure for upgrading from V1.0 to V1.1 is different - please read section 3 in the Getting Started/Quick Guide document. - You must still uninstall the program before installing a new version. However, if you should forget to use Add/Remove programs to uninstall V 1.1 or higher, the install program will offer to do the uninstall for you. When this is finished, start the install program again in order to install. - "Session Control" problem blocking login to IPDS print Server: Sometimes the menu didn't change after a log-in attempt, so it would appear as if you weren't logged in and you could not access all menu items. This problem is described in the Q&As on www.intermate.com. The problem is now fixed. - The structure of the "Halt..." page has been simplified. - Bux fix: Frozen services would not always respond to "Start All IPDS Services" on "Halt/Start" Services. This is no longer a problem. - Bug fix: "Force Simplex & Duplex" (Configuration: IPDS Services > Emulator Setup) was ignored. It is now respected. - "IPDS Job Timeout" on Configuration: IPDS Services > Emulator Setup is no longer user-configurable and has been removed from the configuration page. - The read-only display of "Page Counter Update" has been removed from Configuration: IPDS Services > Emulator Setup. - "Rotation" (Configuration: Printer Drivers > Input Tray). The settings "180 degrees" and "270 degrees" are now implemented. - The term "Output Driver" has been changed to "Printer Driver". - "Resolutions Supported" (Configuration: Printer Drivers > Miscellaneous), has been re-organized to make it easier to choose a good setting. The default setting is now "Any". - License Key ordering now presents all detected NIC (MAC) addresses and allows you to choose a NIC from a drop-down list instead of presenting you only with the first NIC found by Windows. You can still order a license for a NIC that is not on your computer by manually entering the NIC address instead of using the drop-down. When the key is entered on the PC for which the license is bought, the system will check to be sure that the NIC for which the license has been bought is present in the PC. - Order Form Step 2: "Mail to" now works reliably on Notes mail client, which is the only one that there were documented problems with. - Bug fix: Sometimes opening the Error Log cleared it automatically. - When you upgrade after version 1.1, the password will no longer be reset to admin. This means, however, that if you forget your password, special measures must be taken. A Question & Answer will be posted on www.intermate.com - Log display is now in tabular form. - Mozilla browsers: Lists in the on-line help are now presented properly. Known limitations: ------------------ - The following limitations seem to be a consequence of the IPDS Client 2005's running as a Windows Service (thus enabling automatic restart after restoring power): - The program will only detect network printers defined as local printers on the PC it is running on. An error message will be generated in the IPDS Client error log (this replaces the error 1801 mentioned in the last note). - At the end of the install procedure, a separate windows is opened for each of the items you want shown. However, Mozilla browsers (Firefox) do not always open separate windows. Corrections to on-line help and screen texts: --------------------------------------------- The help file stated incorrectly that Intervention Required events are not reported to the host if Page Counter Update is set to Early. This statement has been removed. Descriptions have been improved for "Emulation", "IPDS Resolution", and "Valid Printable Area (VPA)" on the Emulator Setup page from Configuration: IPDS Services. Description has been revised for "Color Support" on the Misc. Setup page from Configuration: Printer Drivers. Information on the non-configurable Page Counter Update parameter has been removed. Changes to the Getting Started & Quick Guide document ----------------------------------------------------- - Document expanded and re-structured to provide more information on configuration and use of this product. - Descriptions of changed and new options have been edited/added. - Information has been added on network printers, VPA, and port management. - The document has been physically re-formatted in order to support printing on Letter-sized paper as well as A-4. Release 1.0 2005-06-07 ====================== Release 1.0 Changes: -------------------- - No functional changes since Release Candidate G52-10rc-006; no previous public release history. - Memory leak in G52-10rc-006. Under certain circumstances, PC memory was not released after a print job. This is now fixed. - Major differences from Intermate's IPDS Client ("P18") for Windows: * Runs as a Windows Service * Up to 64 sessions * InfoPrint compatibility including scalable fonts and 2D barcodes * Exploitation of Windows GDI graphics instead of full page images * Exploitation of Windows print drivers installed on the server PC * Web-browser-based Administration GUI Release 1.0 Known limitations: ------------------------------ - The GUI in this release does not fully support Mozilla browsers. - Rotation (IPDS Tray Info from Configuration: Output Drivers) "180 degrees" is not yet implemented; if you choose it, the result will be the same as "0 degrees" "270 degrees" is not yet implemented; if you choose it, the result will be the same as "90 degrees" - In the following situations, attempts to print will fail, although no error is reported to the host. - You have deleted or renamed a Windows driver used by an IPDS Service while it had an active host session underway. - You have deleted or renamed a Windows driver without also actively performing an Update in the Output Drivers menu. Error code 1801 will be generated in the IPDS Client error log. - It is a good preventive practice to stop the IPDS Services from within the program before modifying, adding or deleting Windows drivers on the PC. And, after doing so, you should actively Update the Output Drivers menu. It is not necesary to stop the Windows Service. - If you want to uninstall the program, you must first make sure that the Windows Service is Stopped before using the Windows Add/Remove program function. In a future release, the uninstall procedure will shut the Windows Service down for you. - If you want to install a new release on top of an existing release / release candidate, you need to Stop the Windows Service. **********************************************************************
